1. Where should I sit? You are welcome to sit anywhere that you feel comfortable. There is no reserved or assigned seating. 2. Where’s the band? In the early centuries of the church singing was with voice only, without accompaniment by instruments. At Northwest, as in many other Restoration Movement churches (see below), we have made the decision to follow this ancient tradition. We hope that everyone who worships with us, whether you consider yourself a good singer or not, will feel free to join in the singing. 3. Why don’t the worship officiants wear robes or vestments? We think the practice of having certain people wear robes or vestments in worship communicates the inaccurate idea that some of us are more important or holy than others. The Bible teaches that all Christians are clergy. 4. So who leads your church? Northwest is led by elders, who are selected by the congregation as men who are spiritual, godly, and devoted to the well-being of the church, as seen in Bible passages like 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9. The church has also appointed deacons (1 Timothy 3:8-13) to lead certain specific ministries of the church. We also have three ministers, who serve under the oversight of the elders. Our ministers have seminary training and do much of the preaching and teaching, in addition to other responsibilities. 5. What denomination are you a part of? Northwest is part of a loose association of churches called the Churches of Christ. We are not part of a denomination per se, in that we recognize no authoritative governing organization such as a headquarters, conference, diocese, or synod. Among Churches of Christ, each local congregation is free to make its own decisions, determine its own practices, appoint its own elders, and call its own ministers. Churches of Christ, along with the Independent Christian Churches and the Disciples of Christ, have a common heritage in the nineteenth-century American Restoration Movement. The Restoration Movement was an initiative to restore the Christianity of the New Testament to the confused religious landscape of frontier America. At Northwest, it is still our goal to restore in our individual and community lives the courage, devotion, and faith of the New Testament church. ![]() |
